Problem: Boeing Realty Corporation required the development and implementation of an accelerated site-specific closure strategy that would simultaneously provide demolition, characterization and remediation services. Furthermore, Boeing required the implementation of this strategy and subsequent closure of the first 50-acre parcel within an 18 month window to meet prospective purchaser requirements.
Strategy: Using risk assessment techniques, a site-specific set of risk-based closure standards were developed for use during demolition and characterization activities. Soils were analyzed using mobile laboratories at the site and contaminated materials exceeding the screening criteria were stockpiled for removal. A closure risk assessment was developed for final agency closure.
Result: The first 50 acres were closed ahead of schedule and the site has subsequently been redeveloped into thriving commercial / industrial facilities.
