The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) developed a new tool to screen the environmental health of California’s communities as part of CalEPA’s environmental justice program.  The California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool, CalEnviroScreen as it is called, is a mapping tool that helps identify California communities that are most affected by many sources of pollution, and where people are often especially vulnerable to pollution’s effects.  The screening tool evaluates the burden of pollution from multiple sources in communities while accounting for potential vulnerability to the adverse effects of pollution and ranks census tracts in California based on potential exposures to pollutants, adverse environmental conditions, socioeconomic factors and prevalence of certain health conditions.
